Vodka is a strong spirituous drink, particularly liked all over the world and taken on various occasions. Almost every country has its vodka distillers, which use unique traditional formulas for the production of this strong spirituous drink. Some historical sources claim that production of vodka in Lithuania has started more than several centuries ago. They say that our ancestors knew highly complex processes of vodka production in days of yore, which were later taken over by other neighbour nations.
The process of producing vodka is very complex and requires particularly thorough work and tremendous patience. This strong drink is made of rectified spirit and water. Both ingredients are highly important for the quality of vodka. Water must be crystal clear, colourless, without any extraneous smell or taste, therefore it is purified and filtered before being used for the production of this strong spirituous drink. Meanwhile the grain is milled to get flour. That enables to eliminate all unnecessary additives.
The first process in the production of vodka is fermentation of water and grain flour mixture. As a result of fermentation, a mixture of about alcohol 8 % volume is generated. Then vodka is distilled till it becomes a spirit of alcohol 85–90 % volume. Distillation can be done using equipment of two types: continuous distillation and pot type distillation boilers.
Rectification, in other words – elimination of all unnecessary additives from spirit, is the third process in the production of vodka. Then it comes to distillation of the selected grain mass, and the spirit obtained is used to render a certain character to the drink. Spirit distilled in parallel is mixed with rectified spirit, therefore the consequent 95% spirit gains slight grain hint. This specific part of the production process is strictly kept in secret by all distillery plants.
Then the last stage of production starts – mixing of spirit and water. It results in vodka with alcohol 40% volume, which is then bottled.
Vodka drinking habits are very different. Some people like taking it chilled alone, others mix it with juice or soft drinks. According to experts, it doesn’t matter with what and how vodka is taken, feeling its exceptional taste and flavour matters. |
